Images from the Singing Wells trip to record the music of the Luo. We travelled by road from Nairobi to the shores of Lake Victoria and recorded different music groups from the Luo tribes.
Namaddu Troupe Group

She then returns to husband, who has been off drinking, and they reunite. “Kwakira Wiita”: A song about eating new food, particularly millet, after the harvest. Our recordings concentrated on the music of the Giriama and Digo clans – a music style renowned for rhythmic percussion, vocal solos and harmonies. Otacho Young Stars Group
…the resort, including ‘Charles Manager’, a sincere song showing gratitude to the manager of a factory who has been doing a good job. Uganda: Music of the Northern Tribes Gallery

Likembe Instrument
…o, mbila, zanzu to name a few. We first came across this instrument on our trip to Northern Uganda, in a small Acholi village called Paibona Tuga, near Gulu. It is a wooden block with metal prongs attached, staggered and of different lengths, to create different notes. Sometimes they are placed on resonators, such as an over turned metal bowl, to create lower notes. The sound is very similar to that of a calypso steel drum band. The Rubanga Kingom…
Filimbi Instrument
…A whistle. The word filimbi is Swahili for ‘Whistle’, ‘flute’ or ‘pipe’. – so the instrument name ‘Filimbi’ could refer to any whistle or flute type instrument. We heard this Filimbi in use by a member of the group Zaire Ndindingwara on our field trip to record the music of the Mijikenda in 2011, played alongside percussion – as a bed for the vocalist in the group….

Eridat Makwiri Group

This is a special sampler album put together, which contains some of the best recordings and tracks we have made as part of the project. It includes field recordings, influences recordings made in the field, influences recordings made in the Ketebul studio in Nairobi and a special collaborative effort between Abubilla Music and some of the musicians recorded by The Singing Wells project.
Shitakha & Balozi Band Group
…ses Alusa. Their style is Milbo. They use drums and shiriri, but also a Shikhorli which we haven’t seen before. This is a shaker/bell, where two ball bearings of different sizes/tones are welded into metal pouches and then he plays. Moses is considered the best Shikhorli maker in the area. Here’s the band….
Jackie Akinyi Group
…n 1998, she started singing with Jambo Star Band of Mwanza Town, and while with them, she composed her song known as “Wawili Wawili” in the year 2000. After this song did very well on the Kenyan market, she decided to move to Kenya. It was during the years 2004 and 2005 that she met Tabu Osusa (a music producer), who invited her to Ketebul Studios, where she recorded her first album titled KUNDI, featuring 8 tracks….
Mariene Traditional Dancers Group
…ong is about herding… He asks a woman for thin porridge which is kept in the gourd during long trips away. He meets someone else that wants the gourd and dies with it.
